Character Animation Poses
In Adobe Illustrator
Overview
Working with characters is a big game now. Animated characters are mostly in use now. Whether it's an Ad on the internet or a simple carousel, posters, banners, and the top of all animated explainers videos.
Animated Videos are the new trend of the era in advertising. Every startup to the famous brands want their own explainer videos in which with help of animated characters they explain about their product or service. In these animated videos we make a storyboard in which we have a series of some continuous and relative visulas according to the scripts that form into a story in Adobe illustrator and then we animate them in the Adobe After Effects. In these visuals sometimes we make a character in a continuous story so we need a character in different poses.
The Problem
If you are a designer and working on a storyboard for any animated video, you are definitely facing difficulties during character making. You need a character in different poses like standing, sitting, back pose, side pose and so on , so that you can use it to show any situation. Online resources are limited with their character poses. You can find many characters but not the same character with the different poses. You there is only way to design them with your tool. Although it is not as hard to design these poses of characters.
In this blog you will learn the technique to design these poses easily and quickly.
Start with Simple
Take a simple character standing front from any vector file, you can download it from any Source for instance Freepik or Vecteezy. I have taken a character from the website stroryset.com.
Let's dive into this cool tutorial to design a character with different poses.
Front Pose
Now, here you can see this character facing straight to me, this one is called a front pose, in this
view mostly the character watching in straight to you and hand positions looks properly in front both the ears are shown with some part.
Side Pose
In Side view you will get to know the side proportion of the character. Let's see what you would have to keep in mind when you are designing a side view of a character. There can be two poses in the side view of a character. One is properly looking to the left or right and one is some body turning into front for example in the image shown below. Here you can see the two poses of the character turning to the left. If we analyze this pose of the character here are some points the you should keep in mind.
1. Respective ear should be hidden behind the head of the character.
2. Respective shoulder and bicep should be behind the body of the character,
If we are designing the feet
3. Respective leg should be slightly hidden behind the front leg layer of the character.
Same points we keep in mind during the designing of the right side of the character.
But the time the thing must be designed respective towards the right side of the character
Back Pose
Sometimes we need character to show that he is focusing on the things we are. For example, if we are student and a teacher the writing something on the black board of her we can directly see the back pose of the teacher. Here we need the back pose of the character.
Here again we have two positions of poses of the character in back pose
1. Turn Around back
2. Straight back
He we have some points to keep in mind during designing the back poe of the character
When designing the turn around back pose
1. One ear should be hidden behind the head
2. One leg should be hidden behind the front leg. (front leg : depends upon respective side pose
towards left or towards right)
3. Hairs of the back side of the head should be shown instead of facial illustration like eyes,
mouth, nose, etc.
When designing the straight back pose
1. Both ear should be shown with some outer part
2. Both legs should be shown straight with the back perspective of the shoes.
- Hairs of the back side of the head should be shown instead of facial illustration like eyes, nose, mouth, etc.

Conclusion
As a designer, you have to practice more and more on illustration. And this type of tutorial or we can say quick study on the illustrations will make you confident about designing the more about the illustrio designing. Most of the designers feared that they can’t illustrate the character or the any other perspectives of any illustration like this.
In Webdew, we have a team of designers with skills in understanding the character illustrations. And if you want to use a character in your explainer video with that. You are always welcome.
